In 2020-2021 I asked 6 composers to write me pieces for electric guitar and electronics for a project called, "dark is a way." The two pieces presented here are the first two pieces I received.

The project's title comes from a line in a Dylan Thomas poem, and Yaz Lancaster is, in addition to being a wonderful composer, also a remarkable poet. For their piece they turned to the writings of Jericho Brown and share in the score:

"Where the world ends, everything cut down.
John Crawford. Eric Garner. Mike Brown.

—Jericho Brown (final couplet from his poem 'The Tradition')"

When I was in graduate school I would fly nearly monthly between Boston and Louisville. I would use the times in the airport to set intentions and plans for future projects. It was in such a session that the early parts of this project were conceived. I remember it being very early in the morning at the wretched Boston Logan International Airport and writing in a notebook the rather embarrassing question, "What if The 1975, but classical music?" Little did I know Cassie would go on to answer that inquiry beyond anything I could have hoped for.

About her piece Cassie writes:

"This may be the only time in my life
where I could ask anybody the same question
and already know the answer."
