about

"the sun also rises" represents the fruits of 2 years and some change of fulfilling collaboration with Bosba, a composer I'm glad to consider a friend.

In the Summer or Fall of 2018 I asked if she would be willing to write me a miniature for a project I was starting. She said she was interested, but that at the time her schedule didn't allow it and it would be better to wait a little bit. In the Spring of 2019 she emailed me asking if I was still interested in working together, and if we could participate in a weekend residency at the New England Conservatory as a pair. Of course I eagerly agreed. Instead of a miniature she sent me two whole pieces, "Introit" and "Ode."

I had hoped to use the original idea of getting her to write me a miniature to bait her into writing me a bigger piece. Even though "Introit" and "Ode" are larger pieces, I still wanted something bigger. In the bleak Summer of 2020 she sent me "the sun also rises." I've now attempted to begin this sentence like 5 times and still am not sure what to say about this piece other than that I'm extremely grateful for it and that I really think it has a place amongst the great masterworks of the classical guitar repertoire.

The final piece, "Dizzy Night," was composed for the Guitar Foundation of America's Mentorship Program. I am very glad they asked Bosba to write for them, and I hope this opens doors to other guitarists playing her music. "Dizzy Night" is kind of like the postscript to "the sun also rises." To me it takes a lot of the same musical ideas, but ends them with some sort of optimism. When the piece ends I am left with this phrase Bosba wrote once that seems to me like it would fit at the end of the work like the way Debussy would put the titles of the preludes at the piece's conclusion. I guess in many ways this phrase also sums up how our lives have gone independently the last 2 years. Things have been really bad and they don't necessarily seem to be getting better but like she once said, the sun always rises.
